Mock ups
Bar before crash base
Bar before crash base + light filter
Bar before crash + interface test
Bar before crash base + interface/dialogue test
Bar before crash base + interface/dialogue with extra sprite test
... Mike I can't remember if you've programmed in the sprites for all dialogue....
Anyway this is what I meant by having a 50% black opacity over the bg when Yu talks to another character, the focus would be on on the characters and not on the bg like so.

Yu's compartment before/after
....I'm so silly ... I need to check whether the bg layer for the window is transparent or not for the moving animation...crap!
Hopefully the after crash bg looks way more sinister now....

monndaaayyy
Hi guys, sorry I haven't been around very much this past week. Since this is the last week now before the deadline though this project is my first priority so please text me if theres something you need done and ill get to it, this week im all for this project ^^ (except for the hour on saturday when merlin is on... heheheh)
okay so stuff im working on.. ive hit a bit of a wall with these so let me know what you want added/improved?
i cleaned up and added a few things to jades concept art;

(maybe it needs more shadows.. and stuff in the bg? although see if you can see the thing i already added in the bg)
and tried to do yus room after the crash;

(maybe i should make the entire bg a slightly darker colour..? or should we do that in post?)
ill work on the magazine illustration next then go back to these if there are suggestions! keep up the great work! x

Magazine Cutscene I
Mainly for the artists but this is a quite compilation inspiration post for it.
This is an except/ draft of what I've written so far of the edited script for the magazine cutscene but hopefully it'll give you an idea in how it'll work.
It's basically done in the same style as the cutscene on dA: http://jdwasabi.deviantart.com/art/Hungry-Whispers-OP-PREVIEW-258592236?q=gallery%3Ajdwasabi&qo=3 except, the text will be fade ins rather than typed and the audio will be more linear. Actually, it might be better if the user is not in control of this cutscene just so that I am in control of all the buildups lol.
I'll post up the full script changes when it's ready but I'll type out what I've done so far just so that you have an idea:
Travel Mag Cover: (Tourist trap type magazine, gaudy looking. You can use the Train logo like I used on the train ticket in one of my earlier posts or make a new one I don't mind).
"Tour Guide Monthly: special issue focusing on 'Ghost Month'"
Add some filler stuff for the front cover too. OR maybe just have the title and a picture of a scary Asian Demonic mask. Some random examples which I found:
From this link which has loads!!! <-- http://www.superstock.com/stock-photography/Demon+Mask
I'm not fussed where the mask originates from, as long as it's Asian of some kind.
From http://www.edunetconnect.com/cat/timemachine/250sea.html Lol this mask looks....naughty XD.
Chinese opera masks also works: http://www.google.co.uk/search?gcx=w&ix=c2&q=south+east+asian+demon+mask&um=1&ie=UTF-8&hl=en&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1547&bih=1043#um=1&hl=en&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=chinese+opera+mask&pbx=1&oq=chinese+opera&aq=1&aqi=g3g-s1g6&aql=&gs_sm=e&gs_upl=180379l182257l0l183797l13l10l0l4l4l0l181l704l2.4l6l0&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.,cf.osb&fp=f4d9b5af5b439955&biw=1547&bih=1043
Whatever tickles your fancy!
Page 1: (throwing in some ideas: some ornate looking gates (like those used in Shinto shrines?) which are open, spirits pouring out, make them look scary I guess).
It is believed that once a year on the seventh Lunar Calendar, the Gates of hell would open and that its inhabitants would roam the world along with the living.
These spirites are of those who have been denied entry to Heaven. Either by having violent or accidental deaths, lacking proper burial rituals or having no living relatives to pay tribute to them.
Page 2: (incense pot maybe?)
To ease their suffering, 'Ghost Month' is the time for the living to pay tribute and respect.
Page 3: (reference to those really old style of pictures of 'Hell' etc. )
Neglecting or offending the restless spirits are often the cause of great disaster and/or unwanted attention. To avoid misfortune, many believers heed several warnings:
- Do not disturb or take food from the offering altars as they belong to the spirits.
- Whistling at night invites the dead to walk and follow you.
- Avoiding swimming during this time as playful spirits play tricks on you.
- Avoid travelling during this -
Here the cutscene will cut out and a crash sound effect will sound. After this cutscene, it'll be the post-crash part of day2. (Please refer to the old scripts of day2 if you're really confused but they'll be updated properly once I've typed them out.)
Some images:
Coloured bg, with black silhouettes is what I'm aiming for.
Art style wise, some Asian shadow puppets, especially those of Java and South East Asia:
Java:
Click on the 2nd image to go to the website for some SE Asian classical dance poses done by real humans too XD.
With bg:
From this link: http://minyos.its.rmit.edu.au/aim/a_notes/01_cutouts_project.html as it has some animation stuff too I think (didn't read all of it) so it may be useful.
I know the designs look complicated but downloading but you can easily use some Asian pattern textures from dA to give it the shadow puppet effect (I've got some already which I can dropbox too).
I'm expecting just a small inanimate images that takes up less than half a page (1280x720, 72 pp), the rest will just be black for the text so it doesn't have to be a big thing. Something similar to my horribly unfinished lantern concept art like so XD:
Perhaps a little smaller (half the size I reckon) with the text in the left side.
Anyway, I'll post up thumbnails if people are really stuck but I'm quite intrigued with what people can come up with. Please refer to my flicker account to see the photos I took of chinatown too. Ghosts with uber long limbs like the top picture will look extra creepy :D.
Anyway hope this gives you an idea, please let me know if you need any other info!

Painted Defib (sort of)
I have attempted to paint over the defib model...however it will probably need some more work LOL.

Post Pros of BGs / Notice
I believe I can finally say that the bgs for the train corridors and Yu's room are officially COMPLETE. Feel free to post up feedback but I highly doubt I shall go back to tweak minor changes unless they're horribly obvious.
Minor change for the 2nd pic but once the player has talked to everyone on the train on day2, they'd need to click on the magazine on the shelf to trigger the magazine cutscene. I tried to make the room 'colder' but I think I've failed and just made it look 'refreshing' compared to the other bgs. Oh well. It's certainly not 'warmer' compared to the corridor scenes but 'creepy'...not sure. May take back my word and only tweak Yu's room tomorrow when I figure out how to make this creepier.
Hmm okay this is the first time I'm seeing all these bgs together and I've definitely over done it with the red hues on carriage 4 LOL. Silent Hill 3 overdose anyone? Actually maybe it's a good thing that it's slightly OTT, it makes a contrast to the subtle-ness
If everyone approves minus the minor tweaks, I'd say these are done and ready to be inserted into the engine.
-------
NOTICE:
Mike: Could you just extend your CU glass of water to fit the dimensions of 1280x720, 72pp?
Rumzi: How's it going with the items and the bar?
ML: What's the status of the bar? And will you be able to get a replacement tablet pen to help Michelle colour some bgs? (I feel rly bad lol >__>).
I know I've got Rumzi & ML working on the bar but this is just to see what you guys can come up with lol.
----
Michelle: Since I'm in the process of re-writing most of the bits on day2, how do you feel about doing some of the assets for the magazine cutscene? I'll draw up thumbnails and talk you step by step on what I'd like you to do if that's okay? I'm thinking about using the art styles used in the cutscenes of fragile dreams combined with the use of silhouette type art. No humans involved, just inanimate objects with suggestive creepy concepts with mostly black bgs. Rope Emma/Kelly into this if you feel overloaded lol. I'm also thinking 4-5 different illustrations but I'll try and keep it down to just 4.
---
Chris/Tim: if you guys are still up to date you will need to help me try and write the cutscenes lol. Will get onto that asap and send it to you.
---
Errol: Do you have any ideas for the bartender's uniform? Or anything that looks cool and snazzy to fit the bar? XD
---
Jade: You gotta do loads of stuff man, cos you've been slackin'!
- EDIT DAY2 SCRIPT
- SPRITES (bartender, Kemi, Kenny, Riko, old man, rage guy)
- MUSIC
- CUTSCENES
- WRITE UP
- DON'T STRESS.
Aw crap I just realised I forgot to add the ambient glows to the light beams of the corridors. Haha oh well, guess I'll leave it. >_<

Train WIP: Yu's Room
An update of Yu's room on the train. I have grander plans for this yet, but time is of the essence at the moment! It shall be onto the bar next!
The curved shelf idea took inspiration from a concept sketch (It was either Mike or JD's I think) which had a curved chest of drawer unit. I'm a sucker for curves, but the chest of drawers was too large to fit in the room, so I incorporated it into the shelving/wardrobe unit. Then I though, hell it! Why not turf a light in the back of it adding another ambient light source to the room. Once that picture frame/tv screen is on, should be able to have some really nice lighting going on in here.
train bg 1 update
Slightly updated this background, the only things I'm a bit concerned with is the dissappearing carriage, whether we need space at the bottom (or we make it black?) and the handles of the doors lol..

moar crit? did i forget to change something? should i make the lighting less subtle and have the shadows darker?

Background Post-Production testy
Michelle's done some awesome background painting which quite frankly just blew my mind away.
Here are some examples in what I mean by ''applying the post production" ... exhibit 1:
Original:
A)Filter texture application
B) Light highlights
c) Sunset colour filters (since Yu comments about how 'warm' it is and makes him feel a bit sick, plus will contrast to the 'cold' colours of his room).
d) Creepy filter (it's actually a dark blue gradient at the bottom right corner to contrast with the pools of lights and give it a slightly ominous atmosphere. Subtle but necessary).
e) Special nightime version which wouldn't be used but stil quite effective in a weird way?

Thank you so much Michelle! Once ML has finished (tomorrow) would it be okay for you to do more background stuff?! I seriously can't thank thee enough...I'm so pumped about this project again :DDDD
